For the new passenger terminal, a new pier, Pier S1, will be built and the current Quay S2 will be refurbished. Passenger corridors and bridges for access to and from moored ships will be built at both S1 and S2. Passenger corridors and bridges can also be used for vessels other than the passenger ferries that regularly moor in Turku.
S1 – a new pier
The new 217-metre Pier S1 at the joint terminal will primarily be used by Tallink Silja.
Constructing the pier on a clay seabed is a demanding project that has been undertaken by Terramare Oy. The project requires 12,000 cubic metres of concrete, and the foundations of the pier require the driving of more than 300 massive 40–45-metre steel piles into the seabed. Terramare will also install the loading/unloading ramp that is necessary for passenger ferries.
Construction on Pier S1 began in 2024. The pier structures will be completed by the end of 2025 and the finishing work will be done by the summer of 2026.

S2 – a refurbished quay
The Quay S2 at the joint terminal is the current quay used by Tallink Silja, but it will primarily be used by Viking Line in the future. The quay will be thoroughly refurbished and enhanced with automooring equipment currently in use at Viking Line’s existing quay for the purpose of mooring ships to the quay.
The design process for Quay S2 is underway with the intention for the quay to be taken into use at the beginning of 2028.
