Area and traffic arrangements

The new terminal and port field will begin serving passengers in 2027. The carefully designed zoning and traffic plan ensures that everything will function smoothly and safely, even at peak moments in terms of passengers and vehicles in the port, i.e. during the departures and arrivals of passenger ships.

The zoning and traffic planning is the responsibility of Sitowise Oy. The planning work includes drawing up a traffic plan for the field area, consideration for the traffic arrangements during the actual construction work, and plans for the basic infrastructure of the terminal area.

Smooth traffic and the latest technology

The zoning and traffic plan for the port yard includes car lanes for traffic to and from moored vessels in the port. At its widest point, there are 32 parallel car lanes and separate lanes for light traffic.

The yard will be equipped with more automation and electronic systems at the entrance and exit of the car field as well as within the shared car field itself. The plan also covers lighting, electricity, water supply, drainage and ground structures.

In addition to universal lighting solutions, lighting will also be used for traffic control and, for example, to increase the illumination of any lanes in use.

During the project, traffic arrangements outside the harbour area will also be reconfigured, as will the passenger railway leading to the harbour. These plans will be implemented by the City of Turku and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

Stages of construction

  • The planning work was initiated in August 2023 and will be completed in June 2025.
  • The site investigation and ground condition surveys were completed in September 2024.
  • The procurement of a project management contract for the implementation of the yard area will be carried out in spring 2025.
  • The construction work will begin in late summer 2025.

Zoning schedule

The zoning of the Ferry Terminal Turku project area enabled the implementation of the new port terminal and the buildings, traffic connections and parking arrangements it needs.
