The relocation of the port of Turku railway begins

NEWS - Turun satamaradan siirto alkaa_en

The passenger rail connection to the Port of Turku will be moved to a new route in December 2027. Construction of the new port railway will begin on September 4. The port railway project, carried out by the City of Turku and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, is an integral part of the Ferry Terminal Turku project and will improve the flow and safety of traffic throughout the port area.

The new port railway is part of the extensive development of the Port of Turku and the surroundings of Turku Castle. The largest individual component of this development programme is the joint terminal, Fregatti, which is scheduled to open at the Port of Turku in March 2027. The purpose of the railway relocation project is to make access to the port area and the new terminal clearer and more convenient.

The objective of the port railway project is to improve traffic flow and safety for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and rail traffic alike. A protected pedestrian and cycling level crossing will be built along the new track, as well as a level crossing for internal freight port traffic. The existing port track and its eight associated level crossings will be removed, significantly improving traffic safety and efficiency within the Port of Turku.

The railway construction works will not disrupt road traffic in the area, as the new railway line will not include any vehicle level crossings. Rail services will also remain unaffected during construction, since the new track does not intersect with the existing railway line.

Project planning began in early 2025, and the railway plan was completed in spring 2026. Construction of the new railway will begin in September 2026, with the new port railway scheduled for completion during 2027. The existing railway will be dismantled in spring 2028.
