Access to the passenger port of Turku will improve as street works progress

NEWS - Access to the passenger port of Turku will improve as street works progress

Linnankatu in front of Turku Castle will be reopened to traffic after Midsummer on Tuesday 23 June. At the same time, a new phase of work will begin on Satamakatu, and the street will be closed to traffic between Vallihaudankatu and Linnankatu. The changes will also affect parking arrangements in the port area.

With the reopening of Linnankatu, access to the port from the city centre will be restored, making travel in the area easier. However, Linnankatu will not be fully reopened, as the section between Satamakatu and Toinen poikkikatu will remain closed.

The closure of Satamakatu will lead to changes in parking within the port area. Some parking spaces will be relocated to a temporary area between Kuljetuskatu and Juhana Herttuan puistokatu, while parking areas near the terminals will remain unchanged. These arrangements are expected to remain in place until August 2027. Access to properties in the port area will be maintained throughout the construction period.

Temporary traffic arrangements will continue in the northern part of the port area near the Pahaniemi Bridge. Tuontikatu is closed to vehicular traffic on the section passing under the bridge between Vientiväylä and Tuontiväylä, and a temporary roundabout is in use in the area. Traffic is directed to a single lane in places. These arrangements will remain in effect until 23 August and may cause occasional congestion, particularly for traffic heading towards Ruissalo and the port.

The street works are part of a broader project to redevelop the Port of Turku and the surroundings of Turku Castle between 2025 and 2028. The aim is to improve traffic flow and safety while constructing a new street network, pedestrian and cycling routes, and pleasant public spaces. At the same time, the Linnakaupunki area will be developed into a more integral part of central Turku, creating conditions for increasing passenger and freight traffic volumes in the port.
