Port of Turku promotes biodiversity

NEWS - Biodiversity roadmap for the port sector

We are proud to be part of a significant environmental responsibility initiative, as the Finnish Ports Association published a biodiversity roadmap for the port sector in September.

The roadmap is designed to guide decision-making in ports in response to challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecological diversity. It serves as a concrete and practical plan that supports long-term strategic choices in port operations, including both land and marine construction as well as other port activities.

The roadmap was officially launched at the Port Days event in Kokkola on September 18–19, 2025. Its development involved seven member ports, including the Port of Turku. Created in collaboration with Green Carbon, the roadmap is intended for use across the entire port sector and acts as a strategic tool to ensure that port operations do not harm nature but instead support biodiversity.

The roadmap’s goals are divided across four years, during which the Finnish Ports Association will monitor progress through surveys and publish a final report in 2030. The annual objectives are:

  • 2026: Enhancing expertise within the port sector
  • 2027: Assessing and evaluating the current state of each port
  • 2028: Developing a nature strategy and setting individual goals
  • 2029: Implementing nature-positive actions

We view the completed roadmap as an essential part of our sustainability strategy. It supports our efforts to manage climate change and biodiversity loss as a port. We believe it will encourage every Finnish port to do its “homework” and prioritise actions based on local conditions. We are committed to doing our part and will actively monitor the roadmap’s progress as part of the Finnish Ports Association’s member network.
