Port of Turku continues to meet ISO quality standards

NEWS - Port of Turku continues to meet ISO quality standards

The renewal audit for the ISO 9001 quality management system, ISO 14001 environmental management system, and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system certificates granted to the Port of Turku has confirmed that the Port’s operations continue to meet the requirements of these certifications. The renewal audit was conducted by the international certification company DNV.

The audit reviewed both predefined focus areas and the organization’s operations at a general level. Overall, the Port’s operations are at a very good level from the perspective of these management systems. As with any organization, there are still areas for improvement at the Port of Turku—this aligns with the principle of continuous improvement, which is a core part of the standards being followed.

The certificates are based on standards defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a global, independent, and non-profit standardization body. ISO certifications require organizations to operate systematically, with documented processes, identified risks, and ongoing monitoring of customer satisfaction.

The ISO 9001 quality management certificate recognizes that an organization’s processes are well managed and meet internationally agreed quality requirements. The ISO 9001 certificate covers several areas, including customer satisfaction, continuous process improvement, and risk management. The ISO 14001 environmental certificate requires, among other things, the management of environmental impacts and continuous improvement, while the ISO 45001 occupational health and safety certificate focuses on employee well-being and the prevention of safety risks.

The Port of Turku has long been a pioneer in responsible port operations, with its systems certified since 2002. Certified management systems support the Port’s strategic objectives, such as achieving carbon neutrality by 2029. Successfully passing the renewal audit demonstrates the Port’s commitment to continuous development and compliance with international standards.

The ISO certificates granted to the Port are valid for three years. Annual surveillance audits ensure ongoing compliance with the standards. The renewal audit, conducted every three years, is more comprehensive than the annual inspections and covers all requirements of the standards.
