Street renewal in the Port of Turku begins – Linnankatu closed in front of Turku Castle until summer 2026

NEWS - Street renewal in the Port of Turku begins

Extensive street construction work will be launched in Port of Turku. The work starts on Linnankatu, which will be closed off Turku Castle from 8 September onwards. The work is part of the City of Turku’s project to develop the environment of the renewing passenger port. The aim is to calm down and open the Turku Castle area for the shared use of city residents and to clarify port traffic.

The work begins on Linnankatu, which will be closed to traffic on the section between Vallihaudankatu street and Toinen poikkikatu street. The closure of the street section will last until summer 2026.

Traffic is directed to a detour through Vallihaudankatu and Satamakatu. Public transport and taxis will also start using the detour route. Pedestrian and cycling routes will also change. There are signs for the exceptional routes in the area.

During the renovation, municipal engineering and street arrangements in the area will be renewed and passageways repaved. Once the work is completed, Linnankatu will become a bus (and tram) -only street.

New, smoother routes will be built for port traffic between 2026 and 2028. The new routes will significantly calm the rest of the area.

The railway route will also be significantly transformed as the port track is moved to the northern edge of Linnanniemi. In the future, trains will enter the port from the northern direction of the Pahaniemi bridge.

The construction of the port train track is in the planning phase, and construction is expected to begin in 2026. The transfer of the Turku port railway is a joint project between the City of Turku and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
