Port traffic and occupational safety

Safety clothing

According to acts on occupational safety, you must always wear a well-visible, approved fluorescent vest or other corresponding clothing (CE EN 471) when moving outside your vehicle in the port area.

Traffic safety and driving in the port area

The principles of the Road Traffic Act shall be followed in the fairways of the port area. Keep the headlights on and follow all traffic signs. Although the highest permitted speed is 40 km/h, remember that traffic in the port runs in different directions and involves trucks as well as vehicles carrying dangerous substances.
- Only drive on marked fairways
- It is forbidden to drive a vehicle in container and wharf areas unless specifically required by the assignment
- It is forbidden to drive a vehicle close to a vessel that is being loaded or unloaded.
- Vehicles on a service run must always use a flashing light on the roof.

It is absolutely forbidden to drive vehicles to the wharf in the chemical and oil port if a vessel is being loaded or unloaded on the wharf.

Vehicles must give way to trains and machines. The driver of a vehicle stopped or parked close to a crane or on tracks must remain beside the vehicle. If a vehicle or trailer has been positioned in the port’s movement area against the port authority’s instructions, and the driver or holder of the vehicle does not move it, the vehicle can be moved by the port authority at the expense of the vehicle driver or holder.

Passengers should not be taken to the closed port facility (ISPS area), and if there is a passenger, he/she must remain in the vehicle. The driver is responsible for the persons in the vehicle. The same rules apply to all of the port’s ISPS areas. Vehicles may not enter the port facility to wait for cargo, and the port facility may not be used as a waiting area.

Ice must be removed from the top of the container or trailer before heading for the highway. This must be done on a site specifically intended for that purpose.

If you suspect overweight before leaving the port area, you can weigh the load using a fee-paying cargo scale in the port. The location of the scale is shown on the map.

Agree on appropriate procedures with you operator and principal.

Environmental safety

It is forbidden to idle vehicles in the port area. The use of the diesel engine of a thermal unit is forbidden, too. Read the port waste management instructions. Oil waste is considered hazardous waste, which must be taken to the hazardous waste collection area. Other waste, too, must be taken to appropriate collection points. Their location is shown on the map of the port area and in separate environmental instructions.

Damage

If the user of the port causes damage to the port’s wharfs or other equipment, he/she must immediately notify the port control of this. The port will then draw up a damage inspection report and arrange a damage assessment occasion to which the person having caused the damage or his/her agent is invited.
