First aid and what to do in cases of emergency

Order of actions when arriving in an accident site first (What is my role?)

1 Assess the situation:

1. Find out what has happened, the number of persons in need of help and the type of help needed
2. Call the emergency number 112
3. Also contact the port control, which has its own emergency staff to help you

2 Rescue:

1. Approach the danger site without endangering your own or others’ health. First rescue those in danger
2. Give first aid

3 Prevent further accidents

4 Give emergency first aid:

- breathing -> resuscitation -> major bleeding -> burn (emergency shower)

If the burnt area is large (20% of the skin area), only provide brief cooling after which the patient must immediately be taken to further care.

What to do in the case of an accident involving dangerous substances

Immediately call the emergency number 112 and tell:

1. What has happened
2. If there are injured persons
3. What substance was involved in the accident (category and UN No.)
4. If something is something on fire or leaking
5. If there is a danger of explosion or ignition
6. Describe the accident site (possible guidance to the area)
7. Whether there is public traffic nearby
8. The wind direction in the area; also,
9. Do not hang up until you are permitted to do so

When approaching an accident site involving cargo (not just dangerous substances):
remove outsiders from the site and keep them away, and arrange guidance to the site where necessary.

Do not walk into or touch the leaked substance. Avoid breathing any vapours, smoke and dust even if dangerous substances were not involved in the accident. Do not assume that gases and vapours are harmless, even if there was no smell.

What to do in the case of fire

1. Rescue those in immediate danger
2. Call the emergency number 112 and also report the fire to the port control, tel. +358 2 267 4122
3. Extinguish and confine the fire. Use emergency extinguishers. Prevent the fire from spreading.
4. If the fire is in a real property or warehouse, close all doors
5. Guide rescue units to the site and explain the situation

Also use the portable extinguisher of your vehicle

What to do in the case of an oil spill

1. If you detect an oil spill or are involved in it, determine the scope of the spill
2. Immediately report the spill to the port control, tel. 267 4122, which will send personnel to help you
3. Determine whether you can manage the situation on your own. If not, call the emergency number 112
4. Warn other traffic and isolate the spill area from traffic
5. Deliver sorbents and other equipment from the anti-spill container to the site of the spill.
6. If fuel or oil has leaked from your vehicle to the port area, you can collect it using sorbents. The location of the anti-spill container is shown on the map.

To control an oil spill, you need the following equipment:
- sorbents
- brushes and shovels
- plastic bags
- disposable boom
- wheelbarrow
- drain covers
- portable lamp
