Transportation of dangerous substances

The transportation and temporary storage of dangerous substances in the port area is governed by a decree. An advance notification must be submitted of all dangerous substances to be transported via the Port of Turku. The notification must be made in good time, 24 hours before delivery of the cargo unit to the port at the latest. It is for the principal to submit the notification. Un-notified dangerous substances are not accepted.

In the case of the transportation of particularly dangerous substances, a preliminary inquiry must be made in order to check whether the lot can be transported via the port. The inquiry must be submitted to the Port of Turku three days before the delivery.

Explosives category 1 in the IMDG class and its subcategories 1.1 and 1.2 : 20 000 kg / max

Class 1 and its subcategories 1.3 : 80 000 kg / max

Class 1 and its subcategories 1.4 : 120 000 kg / max

Category 5 and organic peroxides of subcategory 5.2 when the lot exceeds 20 000kg.

Category 7, all radioactive substances (except for UN 2908-2911).

A preliminary inquiry is not required for subcategory 1.4S.

All transports requiring a preliminary inquiry are covered by direct exports/imports.
It must be ready to launch special arrangements every time. Substances of this kind must be collected directly from the vessel or carried directly onto the vessel. Even their temporary storage in the port areas is prohibited.

The waiting areas for dangerous substances in the Port of Turku do not concern the aforementioned categories.
For other categories, the storage times in the waiting areas is 24 hours, provided that separation requirements are fulfilled between different substances.

The IMDG code labels on empty transport units may not be removed before the unit has been properly cleaned.

The practice of the Port of Turku is that the party unloading the unit must also clean it and remove the labels! If empty labelled units are stored elsewhere than in the waiting areas, the port will take them to a confined area, which always gives rise to direct costs. The port considers a labelled unit to contain the cargo that it most recently contained.
