A pioneer in ensuring safety at port
In the same way as the environmental programme, the Port draws up and maintains the safety programme. Its primary purpose is to secure and develop occupational and cargo safety in the port area and solve the problems related to the transports of dangerous goods.
The Port of Turku's safety system is based on the international ISPS code; the required access control in the Port of Turku is enhanced with a wireless video surveillance system. The data transmission solution of the system is a WiMax-based network formed by radio modems and base stations. The network consists of a comprehensive system of surveillance cameras, IR rays, computers and gate zones which is monitored and controlled from the Port's control room. The system includes a mobile command centre built in a car which has a constant wireless connection to the Port?s IT system, port control and the Internet. The equipment of the command centre includes e.g. sensors for detecting toxic gases and radioactive substances, and a modelling program for the spreading of gas that utilises existing maps. The car also has a video camera which uses a wireless connection and can be used to view and control surveillance cameras in different parts of the port. The technology used allows for transferring video image wirelessly to other authorities. Hence in case of an accident the right kind of equipment and enough personnel can be sent as per need.
The Port develops its safety systems in close co-operation with the rescue department, police, the Finnish Maritime Administration, Customs and Border Guard.
