Environmental issues at the core of development
The annually updated environmental programme includes goals and actions for the most important environmental aspects in order to improve the Port's environmental issues and prevent the contamination of the environment. The same also applies to the annually updated safety programme.
The Port of Turku's environmental work focuses on reducing emissions to air and noise caused by port operations as well as the development of waste management. In connection with them the Port has introduced environmental tariffs which are based on the ships' sulphur and nitrogen discharges and waste sorting.
Important work is also done to decrease the environmental impacts of the Port's dredging and embanking operations. Together with experts and the authorities, the Port is continuously looking for effective solutions for the placement, utilisation and processing of dredging masses. The Port's environmental programme includes long-term objectives and goals for which more detailed actions with persons responsible and schedules are defined annually.
