The importance of rail connections increases for environmental reasons
The Port of Turku is the only train ferry harbour in Finland and therefore holds a key position in the development of environmentally sound rail transports. The development of domestic goods transports is supported by the basic renovation of the Toijala rail connection and by increasing its bearing capacity to 25 tonnes. As the bearing capacity increases, more and more of heavy inland cargo can be transferred from road to rail.
Completed as Nordic co-operation, the Eastern Landbridge project strengthens the logistics corridor via Stockholm and Turku to Russia. In addition to the ports of Turku and Stockholm, the project involves Green Cargo Ab, CargoNet Ab, SeaRail EEIG and VR Cargo.
