The link between east and west in European traffic corridors
The Port of Turku is an important location in the Nordic Triangle which is included in the European Union's TEN traffic network. The traffic corridor formed by the Nordic Triangle is internationally the most important connection between the EU and Russia, and the key part of it is the E18 road from Turku via the Helsinki metropolitan area to Vaalimaa. The stretch of the road on the Finnish side is planned to be upgraded in such a way that there will be motorway all the way to Vaalimaa in 2015.
The Port of Turku is also a key junction on the motorway of the Baltic Sea. The Motorways of the Seas is an EU project whose goal is to link the sea routes in Europe as part of the European-wide traffic networks. The development of the motorway of the Baltic Sea strengthens Turku's position as the traffic node on the E18 route from Scandinavia and Western Europe eastward and will increase the traffic volumes in the future. The project aims above all at securing the transports now and in the future quickly, safely and in an environmentally sound way.
