Turku is very well connected to the Finnish road and rail network. Indeed, the Port of Turku is Finland’s leading port in terms of Scandinavian transport and number two in unit cargo to and from continental Europe. The road connections around the Port have improved especially towards Helsinki now that the new Helsingintie road goes all the way to the port. Turku is the key point in the E18 road project that connects Scandinavia via Finland to the St. Petersburg area and via Russia further afield to the east.
